1966 & 1980: AnecdotesPast Events of the BandWhile going thru our history books, I noticed some items that we have just done and, are going to do, so thought they mightbe of some interest to you. Our joint band practice the other night brought back memories -----On Wed. May 11,1966 an article in the Galt Evening Reporter read: "Some 45 musicians combined for some stirring music Monday night when members of the Galt Kiltie Band joined the Preston Royal Canadian Legion Band for a jointpractice at the Preston Royal Canadian Legion hall.
Bandmaster Fred Budd and Frank Gadd shared the podium and selections were also conducted by Roy Anderson, Ted McKnight and "Chuck" Adams. Following the practice a buffet lunch, catered by John Fry and Bob Hilborn was served to members and their guests." Another activity that brought back memories was: Did you know our band (35 strong) went to Toronto in April and competed in the 1980 Kiwanis Music Festival and scored 86 points and took first place? We were not allowed to leave the stage while the adjudicator gave his remarks, and, at the end he said "and the best band is on the stand--no doubt they could perform easily a more difficult piece." Under the direction of Bob Emberson we played the Little English Suite. The following month we also competed in the K-W Kiwanis Music Festival. We came second (of three) in the Community Bands Class and first (of six) in the Champion Class Bands. We are going to play for The Great Hespeler Reunion parade on Sat. July 6th. An article in the Galt Evening Reporter on Sat. July 9, 1966 read: "Ten bands took part in the outstanding parade a week ago to-day that was the highlight of the Hespeler's Old Boys Reunion celebrations. The Hespeler Jr.Pipe Band led the parade". It goes on to name all the bands (nine of them) participating, of which the Galt Kiltie Band was one of them.
