Galt Kiltie Band

 

Brief Chronology

1902 In July Mr. Richard Wellington Roelofson was requested to form a band for the MacGregor Gouldy excursion to Elora. This was the beginning of the oldest surviving Marching and Concert band in Waterloo County. Officially named the "Galt Band" on August 15 of that year.
1906 The band purchased the "1895 BLACK WATCH" Highland dress Uniform was changed to the "GALT KILTIE BAND". the new look of the band combined with its musical ability made it much in demand.
1910 Performed at Madison Square Gardens in New York.
1911 A weeks engagement at the Iowa and Minnesota state fairs.
1912 Mr. R. W. Roelofson resigned as bandmaster and Mr. W. "Sheppard" took over the position.
1922 Mr. Roelofson returned as leader. During the Second World War the band almost collapsed due to many members enlisting. Through his efforts the band held together until the players returned in 1945.
1949 Mr. W. "Bill" J. McFadyen became leader, he coached the band in more modern trends in music. The band lead the parade and played accompanying music for the annual school children's concert held at Dickson Park.
1956 Mr. F. "Frank" Gadd took over as bandmaster. He was no stranger to the band having joined on clarinet in 1934. He was a former Galt Kiwanis Youth Band Director and brought a number of young players into the ranks. Of many, two were girls. Mrs. Bette Fox (nee Haisell) is still an active member in 1999. In his honour a music award is given to one grade 13 stduetn in each of the four local high shcools under the name "The Galt Kiltie Band Frank Gadd Memorial Award"
1984 This year Mr. K. "Ken" Dearlove, took over the baton. No stranger to the Kiltie Band, he had performed on trumpet on many occasions as far back as 1959. This was also the year that the band was awarded the "Bernice Adams Memorial Award".
1987 A highlight of the band on their 85th anniversary was a tour of Scotland and England, where they performed many concerts.
1991 The "Bernice Adams Memorial Award" was again awarded, not to the band, but to one of its members. Mr. R. "Bob" Fox, who is a 50 year active member.
1997 Ken Dearlove retires as the Bandmaster, and is replaced by Bob Hougthon.
2000 Bob Houghton resigns from the position of Bandmaster to go and complete his PhD in music. He is replaced by David Davidson.
2004 David Davidson resigns as Bandmaster to spend more time playing trombone.
Allan Lee is appointed as the new Conductor/Bandmaster.
2006 Allan Lee resigns from the position of conductor. Jeff Ford is appointed as the new Conductor.

The band continues to perform many parades and concerts under the able direction of Jeff Ford.
